  • Yield: 4 burgers 1x

Description

This Caramelized Onion Burger is juicy, flavorful, and perfect for indoor cooking. Packed with tender ground beef and sweet, golden onions, it delivers restaurant-quality taste without the grill.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced (about 500 g)
  • 2 tablespoons (30 g) unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon (15 ml) olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon sugar (optional, to enhance caramelization)

For the Burgers:

  • 1 ½ pounds (680 g) ground beef (preferably 80% lean)
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder (optional)

Optional Toppings:

  • Sliced cheese (cheddar, Swiss, or provolone)
  • Lettuce, tomato, pickles, or other toppings of your choice
  • Burger buns or lettuce wraps

Instructions

  1. Caramelize the onions: In a large skillet, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced onions and sprinkle with salt (and sugar if using). Cook, stirring occasionally, for 25–30 minutes, until soft, golden-brown, and sweet. Set aside.
  2. Prepare the patties: In a bowl, mix ground beef with salt, pepper, and garlic powder until just combined. Divide into 4 equal portions and shape into ¾-inch thick patties, pressing an indentation in the center of each.
  3. Cook the burgers: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties about 4–5 minutes per side, until desired doneness (160°F / 71°C for medium). Add cheese in the last minute if desired.
  4. Assemble & serve: Place patties on buns or lettuce wraps, top with caramelized onions and additional toppings, and serve immediately.

Notes

  • For leaner burgers: Swap beef for ground turkey or chicken.
  • Make-ahead: Caramelized onions can be made up to 5 days in advance and stored refrigerated.
  • Gluten-free: Use gluten-free buns or serve wrapped in lettuce.
  • Flavor boost: Add sautéed mushrooms or roasted peppers as toppings.
  • Storage: Refrigerate cooked patties up to 3 days, or freeze up to 3 months.
